Did you ever wish that you could have glorious stereo sound throughout your entire house?   More and more people are turning that wish into reality with what has become known as "whole house sound"  There are many ways to pipe sound throughout ones home. 

The old fashioned way is very similar to a background music system in a department store.  This is called a 70 volt or distributed sound system.  In this type of system the music source device is connected to a distribution amplifier.  Each loudspeaker is fitted with a transformer.  Individual volume controls can be placed in each room if desired.  The down side of the 70 system is that the transformers have significant frequency response limitations and these types of systems generally sound somewhat "flat".

In state of the art systems a multi-source, multi-zone approach is typically taken.   Each zone can have as many speakers as are required to achieve the desired sound coverage.  Each zone will typically have individual control of volume, bass, treble and balance.  In multi-source systems each zone can select from as many as eight different sources.  You can have eight rooms with eight different things playing at the same time!

In addition, most peripheral or sound source devices such as CD Changers, AM/FM Tuners, Cassette Decks, DVD's, VCR's, etc. can be controlled from the remote zone locations by wall mounted keypads or hand held remote controls.  The control signals are carried back to the peripheral devices by cabling and then delivered to the device by an infra red emitter connected to its infra red receiving eye.
